*William Hoggatt is one of the great names of Manx Art. The son of a joiner/carpenter, he was born in Lancaster in 1879 where his artistic talents were recognised at school when he won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. He chose instead to be apprenticed to a local firm of stained glass manufacturers and continued his studies at the Storey Institute in Lancaster. He was later sponsored by H. L. Storey to study at the Academie Julian, one of the leading private international art schools in Paris.

Hoggatt eloped to the Isle of Man in 1907 with Dazine, a friend’s sister he had met whilst working at the Tate Gallery in London. They were married for 54 years.

Working in oils, watercolours and pastels, Hoggatt spent the next fifty-four years painting scenes throughout the Island. He exhibited from 1904 at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute, Royal Cambrian Academy, Glasgow Institute and at many other art institutions, including overseas. In 1925 he was elected a full member of the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and was later a member of the Liverpool Academy and the Royal British Colonial Society of Artists.

He remained very much part of the Island’s art scene up to his death in 1961. He gave lectures at the Manx Museum and was President of the Manx Artists Group and his home became a regular meeting place for members of the Island’s artistic community.
