The old windmill at Drax Hall plantation in St. George is one of the few to be found in Barbados. This plantation was owned by James Drax, a wealthy British planter, who arrived in Barbados in the late 1620's. He was credited with starting the sugar cane industry on the island after it was introduced by the Dutch.

With the transition to the production of sugar cane, mills were introduced in Caribbean territories such as Barbados and Jamaica. The rollers of the mills were the first driven by horses, but were later replaced by cattle. The remains of the Cattle Mill at Gibbons is said to be one such mill.

$3. Morgan Lewis's Windmill in St. Andrew

The Morgan Lewis Windmill is situated in the rural parish of St. Andrew. It is reported to be one of the only two operational windmills in the Caribbean region today. The windmill, which is owned and maintained by the Barbados National Trust, halted operations in 1944.
